Alum discusses shift toward information systems in Qatar
Rashid S. Al Kaabi returned to campus to discuss his experiences in the field of information systems. Al Kaabi graduated from CMU-Q’s Information Systems Program in 2012 and works as a senior systems analyst at RasGas, responsible for managing the IT operations of RasGas’ supply chain management system.
Al Kaabi spoke to students in the Information Systems Program about his experience in the field in Qatar: “One of the main challenges I faced was translating all of the knowledge obtained from my courses to meet corporate needs. Being in the oil and gas industry is challenging, as you need to understand the industry language and speak it too.”
Information systems is an emerging field in Qatar, as industry and government require technological tools to generate, process and distribute information. Al Kaabi considered this developing market when he chose the field.
“I chose information systems because I recognized that we in Qatar are utilizers of technology, and information systems is about using technology to solve today’s business problems. I believe there has been a shift as people realize how important information systems can be to prosperity of the economy of Qatar,” he said.
CMU-Q’s Information Systems Program includes many emerging areas within Qatar, including the increasingly important area of Geographic Information Systems.
