CMU-Q joins Education City partners for successful career week
Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q) worked closely with Education City partner universities to organize a week of career-related activities for students and alumni. At the end of the week, more than 600 students and alumni gathered for the Education City Job Fair. The event featured 111 organizations representing various industries, including banking, consulting, healthcare, communications, technology, energy, logistics, and sustainability.
Dania Makki, is the senior employer relations consultant at CMU-Q and a key member of the Education City Career Events Committee.
“Education City students are very smart and talented, and we want them to feel prepared to meet employers and to present themselves professionally,” Makki said. The committee organized several learning sessions before the job fair, including employer presentations, mock interviews and resume-writing workshops.
Since 2016, CMU-Q’s Mohammed Mirza, senior career consultant, has also spearheaded an annual CMU-Q student resume book for employers. “The employers appreciate the book so they can find which students match their requirements.”
The partner universities also recognized the value in providing employers a collection of resumes to reference. In 2020, Mirza began compiling an annual digital version for all of Education City.
“The EC career development teams work so well together to prepare our students, and to showcase their talents to employers,” said Mirza. “We are all very proud of how Education City students, including CMU-Q students, represent this community when they are in the workplace.”
Last year, 93% of graduates seeking employment found work in Doha. Makki believes the Education City career team collaboration plays an important role in connecting new graduates with opportunities in Qatar.
“The EC Job Fair is a testament to Qatar Foundation and the EC campuses’ commitment to empowering students and alumni,” she said. “We feel it is very important to bring together Qatar’s industry leaders so our students can launch their careers here and contribute to this vibrant knowledge economy.”
