CMU-Q graduate wins four awards at Seoul invention fair
Information systems graduate Mohammed Al-Qassabi won four awards at the Seoul International Invention Fair (SIIF) 2023 for an invention he developed while a student at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, a Qatar Foundation partner university. His invention is a detection system for football matches that detects offside plays, as well as performance and injury issues.
At the international competition, Al-Qassabi was awarded the gold medal of SIIF 2023, the best invention award by the Korea Institute of Patent Information, the Singapore innovation award, and the Gulf Cooperation Council Patent Office shield. More than a thousand inventors from 25 countries participated in the fair.
Al-Qassabi participated as part of the General Secretariat of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) team, which consists of an inventor from each GCC country.
A CMU-Q graduate of the Class of 2022, Al-Qassabi placed in several local and regional competitions during his studies. He was a finalist in the 13th season of Stars of Science, placed in the top five at the Challenge and Innovation Forum Qatar 2021, and a gold medallist at the Doha Oasis for Innovation.
Al-Qassabi was also named a platinum medallist at the 2023 Education Excellence Day Awards for achievements in academics, service and innovation during his undergraduate years.
