Dean's Welcome

Welcome.

It is my pleasure to greet you as dean of Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar.

I joined the faculty of Carnegie Mellon in 1978, and more than three decades later I am still proud to call the university my academic home. Strong traditions of innovation, entrepreneurship and interdisciplinarity drew me to Carnegie Mellon — and it was those values that encouraged me to stay.

For more than a century, Carnegie Mellon has been a leader in education that enhances society in important and meaningful ways. In 2004, Qatar Foundation invited us to join Education City, something that I supported wholeheartedly.

In Qatar, we offer five of our top-ranked programs: Biological Sciences, Business Administration, Computational Biology, Computer Science and Information Systems.

Carnegie Mellon Qatar is a diverse and dynamic place. With continued support from Qatar Foundation, we are uniquely positioned to support and contribute to Qatar’s National Vision 2030 and its four pillars: human development, social development, economic development and environmental development.

Our students are hard working, ambitious and set to become tomorrow’s leaders. Our research projects, many of which are supported by the Qatar National Research Fund, demonstrate the scope of Carnegie Mellon’s Contribution here.

I hope you will spend some time getting to know us through our website. Check back often – we are continually updating our events and activities.

Sincerely,
Ilker Baybars,
Dean, Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar
